Laying the Foundation of Legal Advocacy

Wednesday, May 21, 2014
Comfort Inn and Suites, Madison

How do the criminal and civil legal systems differ? How do I help someone who needs a restraining order? What does the law say about what programs must or must not do to protect the client’s confidentiality?  What can I do to assist pro se victims? Join us to learn the answers to these questions and more.

This is a new in-person day-long legal advocacy training.  It replaces legal training previously provided as part of Core Advocacy and Basic Restraining Order training. Tess Meuer and Morgan Young will be joined by Liz Hanson (PADA) to provide an overview of basic legal advocacy skills.  IF you previously sent staff to Core Advocacy for this training, please send your new staff (or seasoned advocates who need a refresher) to this newly-formatted legal advocacy training. It will include:

  • Interactive exercises
  • Exploration of websites and materials to answer basic legal questions about restraining orders
  • Extensive resources for use with clients when dealing with confidentiality
  • Family law issues
  • Criminal law resources

Registration closed on May 9. Contact End Abuse Education Coordinator for more information.

Please note that this event will start at 8:30 AM and continue until 5:30 PM. Although it is not required, participants who have a laptop (or other device for accessing the internet) are encouraged to bring it to this event. This will be a hands-on training for advocates to gain the knowledge, tools and skills needed to advocate for domestic abuse victims within legal systems.
