Primary responsibilities

Summary:   The Development Director is responsible for securing vital revenue streams which allows New Horizons to achieve its mission and to maximize its impact in the community. The Development Director reports directly to the Executive Director.

Hours: The ability to work flexible hours is necessary. The majority of hours are to be worked Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Must be able to work evening and weekends as directed by agency needs. Working more than 40 hours per week may be required for this salaried, full time position.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

COMMUNICATION EXCELLENCE

  • Nurtures and protects the brand of New Horizons, ensures it is well promoted and all internal and external materials are consistent with brand strategies
  • Collects meaningful success stories and data that demonstrate agency impact and that support fund development strategies
  • Is responsible for appropriate recognition and acknowledgement is given to all foundation, corporate and private donors
  • Is responsible for development of calendars, plans and marketing material for fundraising events and appeals with input of the executive director
  • Is responsible to keep the leadership team aware of all agency and third-party fundraising events
  • Evaluates solicitation strategies and provides analysis to the executive director
  • Develops and produces a quarterly newsletter with input from the executive director and others
  • Creates, writes, edits and produces press releases and publications
  • Uses social media as and when appropriate
  • Develops and produces the organization’s annual report in coordination with the executive director
  • Develops and implements cost-effective marketing and outreach strategies to communicate with a range of constituencies through printed and electronic media
  • Updates and maintains the organization’s website, on-line publications and social media with informative information on the organization’s programs, statistics, needs and awareness with input from others
  • Along with the executive director, promotes and attends community media events
  • Oversees creation of agency publications i.e. program brochures and flyers ensuring adherence to branding guidelines and messaging
  • Prepares and presents regular reports on progress towards fundraising goals

FUND DEVELOPMENT

  • Annually creates a fund development plan with objectives that result in achieving budgetary goals
  • Along with the executive director and the business manager, monitors progress in achieving targeted income and expenses
  • Ensures prospect research
  • Grows a major gift program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of individual and corporate donors
  • Builds a planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequest expectancies
  • Coordinates third-party fundraising special events
  • Directs employee fundraising drives i.e. Great Rivers United Way campaign

LEADERSHIP

  • Maintains a working environment/climate that attracts, keeps and motivates a diverse staff top quality people
  • Engages in and models supportive, healthy relationships through setting boundaries and demonstrations of respect with donors, clients and co-workers
  • Attends leadership team meetings and other meetings as directed
  • Promptly addresses difficulties or problems that arise per agency protocol
  • Establishes sound and collaborative relationships with community groups and service providers
  • Is present at functions that promote our organization and access to our services and programs

Other Responsibilities and Requirements:

  • Adheres to agency policies and work rules, including strict adherence to New Horizons confidentiality polices
  • has reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance
  • is committed to professional development attending trainings regarding leadership and communication as well as domestic / sexual violence
  • trains and supervises volunteers as appropriate
  • performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • BA/BS in English, Communications or Marketing preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience with communications/publications and fund development required
  • Persuasive writing and strong verbal communication skills required
  • Embracement of the mission of New Horizons
  • Strong relationship building and solicitation skills required
  • Extreme tack and discretion, attention to detail and commitment to excellence
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experienced and comfortable with public speaking a must
