Based in Madison, Wisconsin, with staff across the state and country, End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin (End Abuse) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating safer communities and freedom from domestic abuse and other forms of oppression across the lifespan.  End Abuse works with and on behalf of its partners and member agencies on a wide array of initiatives. These efforts include: public policy and systems advocacy, legal program, homicide prevention, outreach to underserved communities, human trafficking awareness, engaging youth, economic empowerment, coordinated community response, technical assistance to member programs, and management of statewide prevention funding. Additionally, End Abuse houses a national elder abuse program and a culturally-specific advocacy program.  

The Director of Finance is the financial leader of the organization and is responsible for monitoring, developing and implementing financial plans and strategies. This includes grant and organizational financial budgeting, reporting and auditing; overseeing the collaborative coordination, development and reporting of financial management of subcontracts; and establishing standards and policies to assure consistency and quality of all End Abuse organizational management of finances. These responsibilities also include overseeing cash flow planning, preparing and reviewing budgets and tracking operational metrics. To be successful in this role, you should have in-depth knowledge of risk management methods and the ability to create forecasting models. 

End Abuse is a medium-sized organization with more than 40 grant funding sources (primarily federal and state) and a $6.3 million annual budget. As an executive leader in the organization, the Director of Finance must promote the organization’s vision, mission and values at the local, state and national levels in order to develop resources that guide the delivery of services to individuals, communities, and systems to end domestic abuse, violence and oppression.   

This position manages and provides supervision to the Finance/Accounting Department. 

Primary responsibilities

  • Serve as internal consultant to the Executive Director (ED), Board, the Management Team and other key stakeholders on all financial matters, making recommendations and suggesting pro-active strategies to keep END ABUSE aligned with its mission and on track. 
  • Partner with the ED and appropriate leadership members to guide decisions related to grant applications based on strategic priorities of the organization in combination with administrative cost-analysis, and past results/outcomes (where available). 
  • Provide oversight for and manage all budgets, forecasts and internal financial plans and processes. 
  • Support accounting, general ledger and operations functions, ensuring that systems are in place to guarantee timeliness and accuracy. 
  • Drive best financial practices within END ABUSE by publicizing standard operating procedures, keeping the senior leadership team, Board and staff up to date on END ABUSE’s financial status and by generally serving as a point of reference for all growth plans and projects within END ABUSE. 
  • Explore and suggest how END ABUSE can invest its reserves and resources to generate passive income. 
  • Participate in all internal planning regarding END ABUSE’s proposed program expansion, to ensure alignment of program, outreach and training plans with financial projections. 
  • Establish annual priorities and benchmarks and conduct regular reporting, measuring projections against actual performance. 
  • Evaluate and optimize cash-flow and liquidity. 
  • Build and maintain relationships with banks, vendors, outside consultants and other financial partners as needed. 
  • Utilize technology to optimize all reporting and analytical functions. 
  • Ensure that END ABUSE meets critical regulatory and legal compliance benchmarks as defined by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Federal Office of Management and Budget Circular. 
  • Keep up with new trends in the financial industry by attending conferences, participating in professional development and sharing this information with the senior leadership team. 
  • Build a top-tier internal finance team by actively recruiting, training and developing talented accountants, analysts, consultants, auditors, and payroll staff, as needed. 

Oversee and Manage Financial Management Functions: 

  • Review all deposits for proper account coding. 
  • Review and approve all invoices for payment, ensuring invoices are coded to proper accounts. 
  • Closely monitor revenues and expenditures and ensure that agency cash flow is adequate. 
  • Review and monitor all monthly allocations. 
  • Oversight of daily, monthly, quarterly and year-end transaction processing; monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting; monthly, quarterly, and year-end closings.  This includes balance sheet, income and expense statements, and general ledger activity. 
  • Conduct analysis on the accuracy of the agency’s accounting information. 
  • Prepare agency’s books for annual audit and work with auditors throughout audit process. 
  • Perform routine project cost analysis (i.e., training events, materials development, inventory, postage, etc.) 
  • Be the financial point of contact for the Board, Auditors, funders and outside agencies. 
  • Manage the indirect cost rate. 
  • Oversee major product and equipment purchases. 


Develop and Manage the Agency’s Annual Operating Budget and Oversee Development of All Grant Budgets: 

  • Prepare annual budget draft for review by the CEO. 
  • Develop budget assumptions and budget justifications. 
  • Develop agency program and department budgets and cost allocation plan. 
  • Oversee creation budgets for grant proposals as requested by the CEO. 
  • Monitor and modify agency and grant budgets; make recommendations to CEO for budget revisions as needed. 


Develop Systems and Institute Practices to Ensure Compliance with Funding Requirements and Record Keeping: 

  • Prepare and submit financial reports on a timely basis. 
  • Monitor all grant funds received and expended, and ensure that funds are used for intended purposes and that the budget is not exceeded. 
  • Develop and maintain systems for effective grant administration to sub-recipients. Review budgets and audit reports for sub-recipients and ensure compliance with funding requirement. 
  • Maintain effective relationships with funding agencies. 
  • Institutionalize grant compliance by providing staff and supervisors with trainings, manuals, templates and forms to carryout compliance responsibilities, including record-keeping.   
  • Improve practices and processes related to contracting, ensuring compliance with grants and employment regulations and laws. 
  • Create grant AND activity-based/operational (e.g., staff travel, technology)budgets and reports.   
  • Create tools and processes for effective fiscal real-time decision-making by staff and program manager. 
  • Develop and implement new office and financial policies and procedures related to programs. 


Provide Staff Services to the Board’s Finance Committee: 

  • Submit for review monthly financial statements. 
  • Submit and review annual budget. 
  • Attend all committee meetings. 



  • Review biweekly payroll. 
  • Work with other staff to ensure financial compliance related issues of benefits, personnel policies, and employee handbook are accurate and up to date, as requested by the ED. 


Leadership and Coaching: 

As a representative of management, support End Abuse’s mission, vision, capacity building and strategic goals with the designated employees supervised by this position.    

  • Provide leadership and manage the administrative and/or financial related technical assistance services to member programs; make decisions; solve problems; develop procedures; develop records/files; conduct meetings; represent End Abuse and do financial presentations at internal and external meetings. 
  • With the HR Manager, and for designated employee positions, manage the employee hiring process; develop or update job descriptions; develop performance expectations, identify essential functions and knowledge, skills and abilities required; form selection committees, and processes for interview and selection of employees. 
  • Manage employees’ performance; provide new employee orientation; train or provide adequate training for employees; coach, counsel and motivate employees; evaluate employees; investigate complaints or performance concerns; implement disciplinary action as needed and in consultation with the Operations Manager. 
  • Manage and ensure effective employee relations; create an ethical, non-discriminatory and safe work environment. 
  • Accept resignations; initiate terminations; process layoff actions.

  • CPA and/or have an MBA in Finance preferred 
  • Experience in senior financial-management role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies for managing cash flow and financial planning. 
  • Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting. 
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the Office of Management and Budget Circular A133 audit. 
  • Experience with city, state and federal grants.  
  • Proven negotiation skills. 
  • Ability to understand new issues quickly and make wise decisions. 
  • Ability to inspire confidence and create trust. 
  • Ability to work under pressure, plan personal workload effectively and delegate.

Salary and Benefits: The salary range for this position is starting at $100k annually, commensurate with experience.
