Shelter Advocate – overnight/weekend hours

Variable Part-time

Starts at $14.50 per hour – shift differential paid for overnight shifts

 

Provide direct services to victims of domestic violence in the 24/7 DAIS emergency shelter. Services include assisting shelter residents with daily living needs and providing support advocacy to residents and their children. Shelter Advocates document services provided to clients, prepare rooms for new residents, conduct house checks, and attend supervision and team meetings. The Shelter Advocate is an awake position. Work shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, overnights, and holidays to ensure adequate coverage of the shelter program. Variable Part-time Shelter Advocates primarily provide weekend and overnight coverage, as well as weekday and holiday coverage as needed. Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) empowers those affected by domestic violence and advocates for social change through support, education, and outreach. DAIS envisions a nonviolent community that actively promotes safety, peace, justice, and hope.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Engages in the provision of direct service and support
  • Provides trauma-informed support, advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, parenting support, information, and referrals.
  • Facilitates cooperative living, peer support, and resident participation in shelter programming.
  • Models and actively promotes positive, nurturing interactions between adults and children.
  • Communicates communal living guidelines and expectations to residents, and addresses concerns as appropriate.
  • Models non-violent conflict resolution and uses non-violent forms of guidance.
  • Maintains client files, agency files, statistics, forms, and other record keeping as required.
  • Packs client belongings as needed; cleans/sanitizes rooms after clients exit; prepares rooms for next client.
  • Performs routine chores and cleaning tasks assigned to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the shelter facility.
  • Maintains strict standards of confidentiality.
  • Advance the work of the agency in a manner consistent with the organization’s values.
  • Adheres to agency policies and work rules
  • Advances knowledge and attends trainings as assigned.
  • Provides cross-departmental/functional support and services as needed.
  • Promotes an atmosphere of extraordinary customer service.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with trauma survivors required.
  • Experience in a residential facility setting strongly preferred.
  • Experience in crisis intervention preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Knowledge of domestic violence issues preferred.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Work is primarily performed in a secured residential facility setting with communal areas, as well as in an office setting.
  • Work requires the ability to ascend or descend stairs, as well as the agility to move about and position self efficiently to perform physical tasks and address emergency situations.
  • Position requires the ability to monitor and observe the activities of clients, and children of clients, within the facility.
  • Regularly exposed to cleaning products, chemicals and solvents. Occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Routinely requires the ability to move or transport supplies or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, while ascending or descending stairs.
