Primary responsibilities

End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin: The Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence (End Abuse) seeks an intelligent, compassionate, creative, motivated, and dedicated individual to serve as a Staff Attorney with the coalition. The position is responsible for providing assistance and training to domestic violence advocates, other attorneys, and community partners who help victims of domestic violence. The Staff Attorney also develops quality resources and materials that aid domestic violence survivors in navigating civil and criminal legal processes and uses their knowledge and expertise in these areas to guide End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin’s public policy and systems advocacy efforts to improve Wisconsin’s response to domestic violence survivors and dismantle systems of oppression. This position does NOT represent individual clients.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Partner with other End Abuse’s Legal Department staff to develop and execute a coordinated plan for the legal department, including cross training in immigration and poverty issues.
  2. Provide regular, timely, and responsive technical assistance on criminal law, family law, victim rights, restraining orders/injunctions, and other legal issues that impact the health and safety of domestic violence survivors.
  3. In conjunction with the End Abuse Education Coordinator and other staff, provide effective trainings to local advocates and other professionals through phone, web-based and in-person formats on criminal law, family law, victim rights, restraining orders/injunctions, and other legal issues that impact the health and safety of domestic violence survivors.
  4. Create, distribute, and update quality legal materials related to criminal law, family law, victim rights, restraining orders/injunctions, and other legal issues that impact the health and safety of domestic violence survivors.
  5. Identify systemic issues impacting domestic abuse survivors throughout Wisconsin through strong relationships with domestic abuse programs and other community partners.
  6. Working with the Public PolicyTeam, promote policy improvements that respond to the needs of domestic violence victims, particularly in the areas of criminal law, family law, victim rights, restraining orders/injunctions, and legal systems and processes.
  7. Represent End Abuse and advance a victim-centered perspective while serving on various committees, taskforces, and workgroups, especially those dealing with program and policy development in the Staff Attorney’s areas of expertise.
  8. Work with and provide guidance to undergraduate, graduate, and law school interns.

Qualifications

Required

  • A Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school and must be admitted to practice in Wisconsin.
  • At least one to three years of work, internship, or clinical experience in the fields of victim advocacy, criminal law, family law, policy analysis and implementation, or related field.
  • Demonstrated subject-matter expertise in at least some of the following areas: criminal law, family law, restraining orders/injunctions, human trafficking, victim rights, dismantling systems of oppression, issues impacting rural areas.
  • Excellent analytical and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Open and direct communication style.

Preferred

  • Experience developing training curricula and materials.
  • A proven track-record as an effective educator, especially providing training related to domestic violence and legal issues. Experience explaining complicated topics in a user-friendly format to non-attorneys.
  • Policy development and implementation experience, particularly on a statewide basis in the legal system or with government agencies.
  • Experience working with immigrants and marginalized populations.
  • Success advocating on committees or workgroups and/or with government agencies.

The salary range for this position starts at $50,000.00.

End Abuse honors the dignity and welfare of all its staff and supports a healthy work-life balance. End Abuse’s office in Madison is closed at least through 2020 and all End Abuse-sponsored trainings and events are remote through 2021 due to the pandemic.

The position is based in Madison but exceptional candidates who wish to apply for a permanent remote position will be considered.
