Supporting Caregivers – An Integral Part of Ending Domestic Abuse

This Mother’s Day, help keep survivors truly safe at home.

ENDING AND PREVENTING DOMESTIC ABUSE DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

Mother’s Day is May 10, 2020. However, for many moms in WI, this will not be a day of celebration. In addition to COVID-19, we are seeing another public health crisis where domestic abuse is “flourishing in the conditions created by the pandemic.” [1] Shortly after the Safer at Home Mandate, law enforcement reported a surge in domestic violence with the Milwaukee Police Department seeing a 28% increase in early April.[2] Domestic violence affects all communities but impacts mothers particularly hard as they reach for their own safety while trying to break the cycle of abuse for their children.

For many survivors, the stressors that can increase their risk of violence are more acute due to the pandemic–loss of income, isolation, and being in an enclosed space with an abusive partner. We know, as they do, that Safer at Home does not mean safe for everyone.

END ABUSE is mobilizing against this spike in violence, working through this pandemic, and hosting weekly calls with victim service providers throughout WI to coordinate best practices in systems responses to support victims of domestic violence. Since the pandemic began, END ABUSE has worked directly with over 150 mothers seeking safety – including access to legal protections, systems advocacy, and gift cards for groceries and medication.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Together we can ensure moms are safe, at home and elsewhere. We believe that, while there are no perfect caregivers, protective caregivers can change the lives of their children for the better. Moms who leave abusive relationships may fear they cannot be good role models for their children as single caregivers. Your donation will show a mom that there are people to help when they need it, that they can be a good role model for their children, and that they can change their lives and the lives of their children for the better.

Your donation will support our work with mothers in abusive homes so they can receive the services they need to thrive. Together, we can ensure moms are safe at home and everywhere.

Donate today.

We need your financial support now more than ever. As we navigate the pandemic, we need to raise funds to ensure all caregivers are safe. Join us in building a better world by donating to End Abuse’s campaign to honor mothers by supporting safe and healthy families!
